Process & packaging machinery terms.

Plain‑English definitions of the standards, processes and components behind our machinery — so specifying the right equipment is straightforward.

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)
A set of standards ensuring products are consistently produced and controlled to quality requirements. GMP-compliant machinery uses hygienic, easy-clean, corrosion-resistant construction to prevent contamination.
CE marking
A conformity mark showing a product meets EU health, safety and environmental requirements for sale in the EU/EEA. Machinery is CE-marked against the Machinery Directive/Regulation with a Declaration of Conformity.
UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed)
The Great Britain equivalent of CE marking, showing a product meets UK requirements. For machinery placed on the GB market, current UK policy also continues to accept CE marking.
Declaration of Conformity
A signed document in which the manufacturer declares that a machine meets all applicable regulations and standards. It is a legal requirement for CE/UKCA-marked machinery.
EN ISO 12100
The core machinery-safety standard covering risk assessment and risk reduction. A risk assessment to EN ISO 12100 underpins CE/UKCA conformity for a machine.
VFFS (Vertical Form-Fill-Seal)
A packaging method where a flat film is formed into a vertical tube, filled with product, then sealed and cut into bags or sachets — used for powders, granules and liquids.
Blister packaging
A method that seals tablets, capsules or pills between a formed plastic (or aluminium) cavity and a backing foil. Aluminium-plastic-aluminium ("tropical") blisters add moisture and light protection.
Granulation
The process of forming powder into larger, free-flowing granules to improve flow, dosing and compressibility. Wet granulation binds powder with a liquid; dry/oscillating granulation forms granules mechanically.
Tablet press
A machine that compresses granular material into tablets of uniform weight and hardness. Rotary tablet presses use a turret of punches and dies for high-volume, GMP-compliant production.
Homogenisation
Reducing particle or droplet size to make a mixture uniform and stable. High-pressure homogenisers improve texture and shelf life in dairy, beverage, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
Emulsification
Combining two immiscible liquids (such as oil and water) into a stable emulsion. Vacuum homogenising emulsifiers do this under vacuum to avoid air entrapment in creams, gels and lotions.
Colloid mill
A machine that wet-grinds, emulsifies and homogenises semi-wet and emulsion materials by shearing them in a narrow gap between a rotor and stator, refining particle size to a few microns.
Fluid-bed dryer
A dryer that suspends powder or granules in an upward stream of heated air ("fluidising" them) for fast, even drying — typically 10–20 times quicker than a static tray oven.
Mesh (particle size)
A measure of particle fineness based on the number of openings per inch in a sieve. A higher mesh number means a finer particle — e.g. 80–320 mesh for fine powders.
CIP / SIP
Clean-in-Place and Sterilise-in-Place: systems that clean and sterilise the inside of equipment automatically without dismantling it, reducing downtime and contamination risk.
IQ / OQ / PQ
Installation, Operational and Performance Qualification — the documented validation steps proving equipment is installed correctly, operates as intended, and performs consistently in production.
PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
An industrial computer that automates a machine’s sequence of operations. Tier-1 PLCs (e.g. Siemens, Omron) give reliable, serviceable control.
HMI (Human-Machine Interface)
The touch-screen or control panel through which an operator sets parameters and monitors a machine.
SS304 / SS316
Two food- and pharmaceutical-grade stainless steels used for product-contact parts. SS316 adds molybdenum for greater corrosion resistance, favoured for aggressive or chloride-rich products.
Hygienic design
Designing equipment with smooth, crevice-free, drainable surfaces and polished welds so it cleans easily and resists bacterial build-up — essential for food and pharmaceutical machinery.
Turnkey line
A complete production line supplied ready to run — designed, built, certified, installed and commissioned by one supplier, so the customer receives a working line rather than separate machines.
Reverse osmosis (RO)
A water-purification process that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove dissolved salts, organics and bacteria — used to produce purified process water for cosmetics, pharma and food.
